maybe so but to have any kind of labor or hauling contract protection we must devise a way to collective bargain as a group of o/o truckers and avoid getting in trouble with antitrust laws. i know there are a few truckers on this site that have experianced that first hand by taken part in shutting down at the port. they have been well educated in this matter threatened with jail time and numerous law suits for taken a leadership role. lifes not perfect so we have to take the good with the bad. i am not a pro union fan myself but i don't close the door to whatever we have to do to get a decent haul contract. without that these trucking company leasing agreements are just an insult to everyone here and we are limited as what we can do legally about them. i know from years of experiance out here we have to try something new to gain the upper hand.

Yes my two trucks will be when tags run out in April unless something here changes at this port. Keep me posted on this idea about drivers doing something together. I read several postings here about creating a hiring hall. I would like to learn more about that. I'm sure others would too. I would like to see someone call a meeting in Savannah to discuss this as well as other issues.

He: -- Earned a bachelor's degree in business management and a master's in business administration from East Carolina University. -- Worked as terminal operations manager for McLean Trucking in Winston Salem, N.C., and Overnight Transportation in Charlotte, N.C. -- Worked for Sea-Land Service for 13 years, managing port operations in Tacoma, Wash., Charleston, S.C., and New Orleans, and serving as a manager of operations for Sea-Land's Americas division in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Liberty Corners, N.J. -- Worked for CSX World Terminals in Charlotte for five years before joining Georgia Ports, ending as senior vice president of operations, where he had responsibility for North and South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Australia and Europe as well as corporate operations. I was told by a checker the Savannah Port was talking about returning to 6-6pm operations. Maybe even 6-730 opps. I sure hope so. I spoke to a Gantry dude recently and he told me we needed to get the phone number to a higher up to complain about us waiting 1.5hrs to get a box taken off or on. The GPA is complaining to the ILA about our turnaround times being piss poor. The workers say they are overworked and there is too much demand from a RTG. They said that if you called the local complaint number, they bury you so no one knows you are complaining. The higher ups think all is good so no need for more hours.

These Jocko's could care less if the whole lot of us sit all day long. It's no sweat off anyone at the GPA because we are not being paid on anyones clock. Until the day we can make our problem their problem costing them in the wallet like it cost us not a d@mn thing will change in Savannah, GA or anywhere else.

Our piss poor turn time is combination of ILA and GPA. Too many give a squat checkers at interchange point, and poor planning by port operations for the trucker, who do not realize without us there is no need for a ship. Also, lack of roadready chassis, poor M&R service, premounts on damaged chassis, and poor service at driver assist pad--half the time no machine there to provide service. It looks like maybe Mr. Foltz would or should look towards Charleston, SC to recruit a qualified operations manager that knows how to utilize the abundant equipment that GPA owns to work efficiently (not half-as*ed) this equipment and GPA personnel at its disposal. He appearantly does not have one now. To expand gate hours would be great for late arrivals making cutoff date, but this should not excuse the long turn times due to inept operations that create long turn times.

We had some problems this week getting Reefers that were road ready again. Maersk did their usual releasing boxes at 330pm and the mechanics putting OK stickers on the bird plug. You pretrip the chasis and had a peeled cap or lights missing. Now Evergreen is doing it. I saw a line of Evergreens at MNR Thursday and Friday. My agent had loads but Evergreeen and Maersk said they didnt have Equipment to meet demand. Loads were cancelled, drivers sat home. Unreal.

Drayerman2--most of the premounts are reefers, we do not do a lot but everytime I go. My cronic lying dispatcher says ready to go. B/S Wrong line chassis, and/or the proverbial chassis needing repairs, never have a running generator on it and wait for a mechanic to do an installation, hook up and possible fueling. and god forbid sit in line at the no give a crap M&R line to dead line the thing and go to driver assist for a flip and there is not a driver assist lift over there . Crap. Hog heaven for somebody. Where are your managers when you need them? Dispaatcher is an idiot, owner/agent pays no attention--unless they determine you screwed up. Good one.

Looks like somebody at GPA paid some attention--calling a meeting. I plan to be there, but it is not clear if only for the port driver operators and/or our shaky cut rate truck managers that do not defend our lack of production for them and if the proposed overtime the port is willing to extend to let us work xtra overtime for work that should have been completed, without an extended gate

That meeting is for motor carrier managers or staff but the way the wording says GPA trucker meeting leaves one to believe that they are wanting to meet with truckers who actually do the work, yeah right. Wouldn't that be something though if we all showed up for their little bash?
Open Bar, I like that! That's business as usual for these boys explained as exploration business adventures or promoted by their vendors wanting to sell them millions in merchandise to run the piers. Wonder how much they are still stuffing their pockets like Dougie taught them to do.

s#*t, I read the post wrong, Owner/Operators are not invited to the meeting 2/4/10, with open bar. It is with our bosses, that the GPA hosts are sure to get them intoxicated and convice them things are well, and under control. Shoot--good business--a couple of rounds and nobody remembers there are any problems. Port should throw one of these b/s meetings at least once a week, and maybe someone would eventually be sober enough to solve at least one operations problem, each week.

Wow! What a wonderful day. I pulled into Gate 4 at 350pm with an Evergreen Reefer. I couldnt help but notice that my lane which was moving very quickly, had suddenly come to a halt at 412pm. Other lanes continued to move in an effort to get boxes thru. But mine sat. By the time I hit the scales, it was 419pm. The highly gracious scalemaster was so kind to send me a 'trouble ticket' and informed me I would need it to get out. In already knowing why, I played his game and asked why I got a trouble. He informed me I was a naughty boy for even thinking I would skirt by with this Reefer since it was 419pm. He said he was following directions by not allowing Reefers in past 415. I then asked him for a ticket on the outbound so I could at leaast pull my box out. This highly intelligent scalemaster became irrate and informed me "What you think you gonna do? Drop it on the side of the road and come back??" I informed him I needed to pull a box out. He informed me I wouldnt be allowed in gate 5 past 430 anyway. So "What you talkin bout driver??" Bottom line was, my drop yard was 5 minutes away. I couldve dropped the Reefer and went back in for my load out for a waiting driver who needed to work and feed his family. But since my Scalemaster said I was punished, my waiting driver got no load tonight. He gets to sleep on the yard. Way to go GPA!

No one gives a s#*t at this port. GOD bless the idiots behind the wheel who want to continue working like but I don't. If you guys on here don't get something going soon I will retire to Hardee's, McDonalds, or the Waffle House night shift crew. I'll just drive my $37,000.00 tractor to work bobtail. It'll make more f^*@%*g money that way but less for Pilot, Flying J, or Wilco Don't retire just yet BBT, the fun is about to start for the year. First we have to get busy organizing a true army of drivers who have the guts to do something about the situation we find our selves in out here at the docks. We have gotten a little rusty in that respect during 2009 but 2010 is a new beginning to take advantage of. We don't need to delay anylonger, times are going to get better soon so let's get started where we left off over a year ago. More on this later.

Many companies are needing trucks now but I see no difference in the rates yet. Road work continues to be a good way to go broke.

Anyone who attended the meeting today at the GPA, please tell and spill the beans!! What was it all about?? I heard they changed the attendance many times. They eventually limited the attendees to 1 per Motor Carrier.
