What's a good mileage rate to shoot for? I was driving a company truck making .47 per mile before buying my own truck right after Christmas. I've been doing that for six years while I saved a little money ahead. I quit my job before the ink was dry on all the paper work but figured I would take a month off anyway so now I'm looking at leasing the truck to one of these local port dray companies. The truck is mostly paid for so I owe very little left. That doesn't mean I will work cheap but does mean I don't have any big payments to slave over like some drivers I have met. Any suggestions?

ok driver, if you were making .47 at your last company as driver wages you can tack on another .80 per mile operating cost for fueling your own truck. figure that at $4.00 a gallon of diesel at a national average of five miles to the gallon. that's now $1.27 per mile driver pay plus fuel without an extra dime toward your any other truck cost. i say you need at least $1.90 per mile before showing any profit for your truck ownership. there are drivers out here in this port jungle hauling boxes trying to operate for $1.27 per mile gross from the company to the truck. that is pure suicide. dumb, stupid, plain stupid. it doesn't make good business sense to start off working yourself into the poor house when taken on the responsibility of small business ownership. we're supposed to be making a better living with our own trucks not accepting minimum wage for five times the risk, work, headache of a company driver!

A good rate is based on paying your self a decent salary after all the truck related expenses are deducted plus something called a profit to put up in the bank...After all - your running a small business not a charity.

I just don't see the benefit of moving a cheap load. With diesel fuel costing $.78 per mile you can't make mistakes with guesswork on fixed expenses. Unless dispatch has a loaded gun pointed at your head there is no other excuse for moving a load of their cheap freight.
