I'm getting a lot of emails - phone calls again from folk wanting to do something big in the east/gulf sometime around holiday peak season.. Just thought we would throw this out here for general info. It doesn't really matter if the industry sees this. They can only observe for now. There is no official action plan of yet, only some ideas, dates being kicked around. New Orleans truckers have returned back to work this week after a job action they successfully won a few concessions on. We'll see where this goes. It's going to be a long hot summer. Stay Kool! Let's save some of the heat for the ocean industry executives who sweat the golf course not working in or under a truck.. They're several truckers here in Savannah who also want to crank up some sort of trucker association again. It may well be time to consider doing just that. We have no voice anymore, no representation in this mega trucking area. We also need some positive local news coverage. Local truckers are certainly getting a bad rap in the media for all the horrific trucking accidents here lately. Our favorite local Teamsters took full advantage of holding a news conference right after the last five people were killed here in Savannah (more like a ridiculous little mini rally with possibly ten people holding up cardboard signs demanding better wages, be recognized as an employee by their motor carrier!) with a couple of the local media stations attending talking about lack of wages, lack of sleep was the contributing factor to the fourteen people who just recently lost their lives in trucking accidents here in the coastal empire.. I believe their timing to be incredibly poor taste to clearly push their Teamsters-employee agenda with ongoing DOT investigations into the multiple crashes and family members are all in a state of shock. They claim as always to be representing the truckers best interest in our large viewing area standing there with foot in mouth while making a barrage of dumb statements.. No wonder the general public thinks we all are a bunch of losers! Actually these local Teamsters probably represent a group of eight truckers(if they each are really truckers?)out of twelve plus thousand who haul marine cargo at the fourth largest port in the nation.. Very sad!
