smoking and skipping

my detroit skips at low speeds when taking off and blows black smoke briefly when accelerating. I've been told this is usually abad injector. Is this something i should be able to fix myself or do I need a pro mechanic. I guess I would be rated as a shade tree mechanic.

most time a bad injector causes one to white smoke some when just started. i would try running a few bottles of diesel clean before taking any other steps. i work on older cats. i do not know what is involved in swapping detroit injectors. cannot be that much.
