I have been leased to four local carriers in Norfolk who pull containers over the last couple years. They all have basically same freight at the same rates. The ones I have worked for all play games with pay. Is there an honest trucking company in Norfolk that one can make a decent living or is this the norm in container moving business? I am leaving the fourth carrier next week because as with past companies this one also can't seem to tell the truth on what loads are actually paying. It's a surprise every week. I don't like surprises on my check. I am tired of auguring for my money. after three months it's time to switch again. I have a perfect driving record & own my truck so no problem where I need to work. The problem is finding some company that not stacked with crooks. Is that possible around here in southeast Virginia? Tired of being screwed in VA.

this is why i left pulling the port containers. we tried at one time getting a union started but that failed. there was not enough driver interest. after that things got worse around norfolk so a couple years ago i finally quit. now i haul flatbed with my tractor. it is hard work but better choices and better people to work with. so far i have been doing five times the money over containers. i will never go back unless the containers go union one day. i dont look for that to happen in my life time. there is no unity among drivers anymore here in tidewater. i still would like to see drivers hold meetings again but i wont be holding my breath.lol

Never lied about detention, overweight pay, or haz mat pay

well that's a first in the dray business. of course it all depends on who the agent in charge is. a crook running a dray companies local operation can break a company. some companies don't bother to enforce any rules on their agents just as long as the money is coming in. when their area truckers finally quit they can't understand what happened there. evans is a good example. they have the good, the bad,& jus plain criminals running their outfit. the tidewater operation is run by a control freak who is more into the title pawn business creating owner operators by selling desperate drivers junk. he can then have more control over the flock or for a better word fleece them. if you want to purchase a truck buy from an individual or dealer not someone who is going to play you as a sucker!

i would say ratio of crooks to decent folk running these companies is 8% good folk, 92% crooks in control. most of their office staff don't care or think truckers are disgusting dirty creatures. think that's a high percentage? well take a good look around the port. now the ratio of good truckers verses idiots out here is probably 35% professional driver or owner operator verses 65% of idiots who are considered steering wheel holders. so you see we have a mess on our hands too. sadly the s#*t companies enjoy this continuing disaster as it is currently because they prosper off the total chaos in port trucking.

yes depends on who the agent is. they make or break company reputation. of course there are companies who can do that on their own very well

Yeah that's about the odds alright. We have helped create the broken down port system. Drivers don't know how to refuse a cheap load.

I have dealt with a couple of the major players in Norfolk.I wasn`t impressed at all. Im sure there are several good local companies in the area but they only one I know anything about is Penn Transportation. They have answered every question I had promptly and paid the same way.Would recommend them based on what I know, and what I`ve seen elsewhere.Good people who treat you as well as you treat them.
