My wife and I leased on with Roadrunner in Savannah about seven weeks ago. Although the original plan didn't pan out they have really tried to put us in a dedicated lane that works with our home base. Plus, they gave us a chance with ZERO port or container experience. Our trucking experience was limited to hauling timber for our own logging crew and later another crew when we sold our logging biz. We like container work way better than timber. For one thing, our insurance went from $13,600 per year for two trucks to $3,100 per year, plus no trailers to maintain. Believe it or not we really like going in and out of the port. We have had a hassle here and there but the order of it all and the way it is organized is impressive. We earn good money with two trucks and don't usually log but around 150 or less miles per day and 7 to 9 hours plus a little commute time from home. We have enjoyed the work and have met many good people. Anyone should be able to net around $1,000. per week per truck for easy work and much more if you really wanted to run. I have read on the net a lot of negative comments about this industry, but that has not been our experience so far. We will do our best with what we have been given and will try and learn something new everyday. Sounds like we got pretty lucky on our first and hopefully last container job!!
Good luck to all.

Update...and to give a little more information... We are still happy with our work. We get to run together most of the time and my Wife takes off most Fridays, She is retired from teaching anyway, so no big deal. This week we did 8 yard to port and port to yard for 35.00 a leg, and 32, 24mile legs for 67.50 a leg, and one odd-ball 28 mile specialty move for 120.00. total gross 2,560.00 fuel and ins. and escrow deducts 850.00 with enough fuel left to run mon and tues next week. That gives us 1,710.00 net. We are very happy with this income. As our home and trucks are paid for and we are using some of the money for two boys in graduate school and to eventually have our farm paid off. We are Blessed to be in a pretty stable situation and we watch our spending closely. We are very healthy and can see ourselves continuing this business into our late sixties, thereby accumulating a decent bit of cash assets...WE ARE 53 now.
FUSION, I would welcome any ideas you may have that could help us along in our journey.
I have seen that the shorter you run the more you make per mile. I'm thinking now that straight port to yard drays back and forth 6 to 8 times a day each would be the most net money, and for us; the easiest job we could find.
Any feedback would be welcomed, THANKS.

No negative comments on my part JGR because if you are happy with what you & wife are doing and making money, what can I say. Besides, it is what you make it that counts. I over reacted when you said that you were working for Roadrunner. Too many drivers have negative comments about that company here in Hampton Roads, VA and if you have managed to benefit from working with them then you should share it with the rest of the drivers that frequent this site. Thank you and sincerely good luck.

My husband works for greatwide and we are not really happy with them. He applied and received his twic card and wants to pull freight for the ports either out of LA, CA or San Diego CA can you give some advice on what companies do pull freight from the port. Also what does 35 a leg mean we are really new to this and would like some help.
