The spike in empties moving through East Coast ports fits with a larger pattern nationwide. The Wall Street Journal last week reported that a surge in export empties reflects "the impact the economic slowdown in China is having on U.S. exporters."
Certain U.S. industries, including those that supply scrap metal and wastepaper, help drive China's industrial production, the paper reported. "Those exporters have suffered this year as China's economy has cooled," The Journal said.
