Final TWIC enforcement deadline announced
October 24, 2008
The Coast Guard has completed its enforcement schedule for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential, setting April 14, 2009 as the last deadline. The date is one day before the card becomes mandatory nationwide.
Enforcement of TWIC will begin at the ports of Houston and Galveston, Los Angeles and Long Beach, Puerto Rico and Guam on April 14.
The Coast Guard also announced that the deadline for ports east of Houston has been extended to April 14, 2009. The original deadline was Nov. 28. The additional time compensates for the period when enrollment centers closed after Hurricane Ike.
Separately, the Transportation Security Administration announced that a power failure in a government building shut down the computer system used for activating cards. The crash did not affect systems for enrollment or status checks.
The TSA said it would reschedule workers who made activation appointments from Oct. 21-23 while it resolves the problem. The agency also will not be able to activate cards for workers without appointments.
