Truckers, Rutgers clash over school’s port logistics survey
By Shankar P. 3/16/2009 |
Port truckers last week challenged a recent Rutgers University study’s claims that the state’s port logistics industry is broken and that the public pays for inefficiencies and truckers’ lax health and safety standards.
The Association of BiState Motor Carriers, which represents four-fifths of truckers operating in New York and New Jersey ports, faulted the study for its “blanket conclusions” on the effects of deregulation, trucker compensation, insurance coverage, age of fleets, wait times and the cost of inefficiencies.
David Bensman, professor in Rutgers’ department of labor studies and employment relations and co-author of the study, stood his ground. He said the truckers’ association “ignored the existence of independent contractors who drive three-quarters of the trucks.” The findings included a survey of 299 randomly selected truck drivers in Newark, Elizabeth and Bayonne.
