Port Officials in N.J. and N.Y. Seek to cut Truck Pollution
Friday July 24, 2009
NEW YORK -- Officials want to clean up the air around the busy Port of New York and New Jersey.
Today, Port Authority commissioners agreed to offer $7 million in grants and $21 million in low-interest loans to help private port truckers buy more than 630 lower-pollution vehicles.
The money would be used to replace pre-1994 trucks that regularly serve the port.
The sprawling complex includes cargo operations at Port Newark-Elizabeth in New Jersey and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, among other facilities. Together, they handled more than 33 million metric tons of cargo last year.
Environmental and business groups are praising the truck program, though some truckers say they can't afford to take on any loans in the recession.
