Port Users to Continue Strike Monday, August 3, 2009 MANILA, PHILIPPINES
Nation
CUSTOMS BROKERS, truckers, importers and other port users said they will resume their port strike tomorrow and said they would file a class suit against the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) this week.
Agapito W. Mendez, Jr., Professional Customs Brokers Association of the Philippines (PCBAPI) president, has claimed that all ports nationwide were paralyzed from last week’s strike against PASG’s alleged illegal withholding of cargoes.
He further claimed that the strike registered almost half-a-billion pesos worth of taxes lost by the government.
He told BusinessWorld in a phone interview on Saturday that the strike on Thursday was temporarily suspended on Friday night to deliver pending containers.
The strike was participated by the PCBAPI, Confederation of Truckers Association, Allied Concerned Truckers’ and Owners Organization, Bureau of Customs Employees Association, customs brokers association and various port users and labor organizations nationwide.
For his part, PASG chief Undersecretary Antonio A. Villar, Jr. told BusinessWorld on Friday that the strikers only compose a small portion of port users in the country. He added they will maintain "business-as-usual" operations. — JFDG
