Seattle Port Truckers To Get Scrapping Bounty On Old Rigs 08/31/2009
Port of Seattle officials are planning a November launch of a truck buy-back and scrapping plan designed to take old, polluting trucks out of service.
Although the port has contributed $1.5 million toward the effort, the program will be administered by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, which has the legal authority to provide funding to truck owners. Truckers who can prove that their rigs were used recently for drayage at the Port of Seattle will receive either a $5,000 "bounty" or the blue book value of the truck if they turn the vehicle over for scrapping.
To qualify for the funds, the truck owners will need to certify that the truck has had a hole drilled through its engine block and has been sent to a scrap yard.
