NJ Terminal Apologizes, Pays TruckersJoseph Bonney Oct 23, 2009 Truckers to receive $100 per transaction for delays Port Newark Container Terminal apologized to truckers for service delays and will issue $100 checks to truckers as it struggles to handle a surge of business that accompanied the shift of Mediterranean Shipping Co. vessels to PNCT. Port truckers have complained of hours-long delays at PNCT since MSC moved its New York-New Jersey operations from nearby Maher Terminals at the end of September. The delays have caused long lines of trucks on streets in the port area. PNCT stayed open on Columbus Day, Oct. 12, in an effort to catch up on operations, but delays resurfaced. In an open letter to the trucking community, Stephen Edwards, president and CEO of Ports America, PNCT’s parent company, said the terminal “did not meet the required operating standards” Wednesday for servicing harbor trucking companies. “For this we apologize,” the letter said. Edwards told truckers that PNCT “will issue a detention check for $100 to trucking companies for each recorded transaction” Wednesday and Thursday. “This will allow us to thank you for supporting us despite (Wednesday’s) poor service,” he said. Edwards promised that, “As our team continues to adjust operating patterns and improves the utilization of new equipment, you will see a much improved service.” He said PNCT will continue to keep gates open until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and will stay open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m on Saturday, Oct. 24.
