several truckers are being told that they will be banned from the port unless they proceed to drive under a back scatter portable scanning truck. u do not have to drive through this device that emits radiation. this presents a dangerous risk to your health so the choice is yours to make. some of these security people are scanning your truck cabs while you pull forward to look for contraband. they're not just scanning the container like they claim. each time they scan you are exposed to a low dose of gamma radiation. the longshoremen have been told to stay clear of these machines so why are truckers still being told they will have to obey. for your safety and that of your family refuse to drive into harms way. if directed to the scanning device tell them politely you will park your truck so they can maneuver their vehicle to make the scan. don't let them intimidate you into driving under the arm because they will scan your vehicle without your knowledge.

Thanks for posting this. I know for a fact the longshoremen received a letter back a few years ago not to pull anymore containers through these gamma radiation scanners. Why on earth would the government demand that truckers be subjected to something this hazardous? The sad part is radiation effects may not be felt until many years later when those who are forced to do this develop Cancer. I dread what this could mean for young children or pregnant mothers who are exposed to these working conditions. Gamma rays even though low dose are more powerful than standard radiation such as X-rays. That is why they penetrate the steel containers with a better photo of what's inside.

I was asked one day to pull over to the scanner but refused saying they could do it themselves or break the seal for inspection. The choice was up to them but I wasn't gonna do it no matter what. After a few minutes of confusion they moved the machine in position and ran it up and down the box while I stayed behind them at what I figured was a safe distance. At first they didn't like that but too bad. I'm not their Buck Rogers test dummy for zapping krypton

Health effects
The gamma radiation is the most dangerous form of radiation emitted by a nuclear explosion because of the difficulty in stopping it. Gamma radiation is not stopped by the skin.
It can induce DNA alteration by interfering with the genetic material of the cell. DNA double-strand breaks are generally accepted to be the most biologically significant lesion by which ionizing radiation causes cancer and hereditary disease.[1].
A study done on Russian nuclear workers exposed to external whole-body gamma radiation at high cumulative doses shows the link between radiation exposure and death from leukemia, lung, liver, skeletal and other solid cancers.[2].
In combination with a thermal burn, gamma rays can reinforce the damage of thermal burn injuries and induce an immunosuppressive effect.[3][4]
Body response
After gamma irradiation, and the breaking of the DNA double-strands, the cells can repair the damaged genetic material in the limit of its capability.
However, a study of Rothkamm and Lobrich has shown that the repairing works relatively better after short high-dose exposure than during chronic low-dose exposure.[5]
It could mean that a chronic low-dose exposure could not be fought by the body.

some one is going to get Cancer from this crap. the gamma ray is low dose but from what i am reading any dose is a bad dose.

DRIVERS: Change can come but it starts with you and me addressing the appropriate people!
As a result this individual was contacted by the Customs & Border Patrol, Chief Norbert Chandler. Chandler gave his personal cell phone number and stated that drivers are not required to drive through any device. Furthermore, Norbert said to request CBP Officers to do a "Moving Scan" and if there were any further problems to notify him personally.

these stupid dummies running at this ga port will do anything told them. i almost got banned until i threatened a law suit over this. i don't go through live radiation emitting devices for anybody. if they want to scan the box i'll drop it and it's their baby. hard to stand up against these people when most drivers are pleased to kiss their ass. what's with savanna anyway? i have never seen so many cry babies who complain daily but are to scared to make a peep.
