Hey OOC, I'm Paul from Boston and I didn't sign on with any other computer but my own. I posted a message on your site to draw out some conversation and let your members know about how things have worked up here in Boston. I joined your forum and had my message deleted on Saturday. Today I tried to sign on and couldn't. YOU DELETED ME!!!!! Thanks, my IP address must be the same as someone else. No wait, you inferred that's not possible! Maybe you just didn't like my point of view. There are many ideas out here among O/O's, some may be different than mine. That doesn't make mine better or worse than yours, that's for all the O/O's to decide. I've been working this idea of unity amongst the O/O's for a long time now and I do it only because it's the right thing to do. Not because I want to be in charge or make anyone do it my way. Let the drivers speak, sometimes you'll like what they say and sometimes you won't. We can learn from each other, but only when we listen! Thanks for the DELETE! Paul from Boston Actually, one the posts were made, the forum was rebooted and all the users had to go through an identity confirming process. Once the forum verifies your email, anyone is free to post whatever. If you go there now, there is a sign up form much like many other forums. Sorry for any confusion.

Pete, I didn't start this thread , nor did I post multiple remarks on their site. To be totally honest, I don't think they are going in the right direction, so I decided to just ignore their ignorance. I just found out Friday night that they had a site, but instead of joing their site, I chose to join this one. Apperently from what I have read here , they want to control anything posted on their site and that is fine. It just tells everyone what kind of mentality that we as a group have to deal with. H*ll , if it wasn't for Jim Stewart and myself, those clowns would still probably know nothing about filing for a charter. I have been to several of their meeting , and all they are is crying sessions. I hope the local drivers can see through all their BS and see the bigger picture. If all I did was speak negative, then why did they ask me to speak at their meeting , and why did Paul want to meet with Jim Stewart , and NOT include the Vice President of the OOC ? Yet again another lie. If you remember correctly , other board members and I turned down your offer for a side meeting with Mr. Stewart and yourself. You remember? The one nobody came to? It was a dirty move on your part for power, we saw it and decided we want no part of it. Is your memory becoming clear? If I wanted to contact Jim, I'd call him or send an email. We have not asked you to speak at our meeting since the very beginning when you put your foot in your mouth. Clowns? Your the joke friend. you are not even a Owner Operator. You try to win voices by acting in malice. Shame on you. Don't even try to assume credit for any of the accomplishments of the organization or its members. I'm sorry, forum readers, for the drama, but you like myself would be most aggravated by someone holding so much contempt and spreading untruths. You wanna continue this conversation? I work the port every day. You can look for me there.

Gentleman, please so kind to accept ones views. I have not read one thing from either of you that was done in malaise. Bickering back and forth will never add to the solution here. You both are right, both have opinions, both are pro OO's. Sometimes one never sees the persons face, consequently their true meaning is lost. That has always been a problem with email. If you both were speaking together you would walk away shaking hands. If their site is edited or if its not, does not really matter? Folks have the ability to visit and stay or move onto another. Paul says its not, and he is the moderator, and if he says he does not, then take him at his word. If you know differently, then just don't go to the site. I never visited their site, so I cannot say anything about it. I am happy here and will stay here, and welcome all comments as being constructive. I am not trying to tell you what to do, but can we focus our attention on the problems without making more? Now shake each others hands, pat on the back and call it even. Life is just to short. Just a suggestion, not meaning any harm. If you have a desire to continue your conversation, might I suggest that Hardtimetrucker, make up another section called differences, and let you guys converse there. I just don't want to give the Virginia haulers a bad taste here. Again nothing meant to harm. Peter I'll agree to that. I think the point of both sites, organizations , etc is to better the livelihood of being an Owner Operator. While we may disagree with each other on related strategies, the end result is ultimately the same. I just can't though, with every bit of restraint I have sit idle while there are instances of false statements generated by peoples personal agendas. So, as far as that topic goes, I'll close my case. Anyone can take the facts or not. It is what it is.

Paul, I could care less what folks put on here. Its wide open conversation. I just don't wish it to turn into "My mother punched your mother in the nose, what color was the blood" type of thing. The prize my man, the prize. I don't blame anyone for defending their position. That is why no censorship is here. I just don't want to get into exchange of phone numbers for no good purpose, type of thing. No personal attacks at all. Attacks against a site, even this one is fine, attacks agains opinions is great, it opens up new ideas, gives folks something to think about. I believe you all know what I meant. Kind regards and keep it focused on everything except personal issues, thats all I meant to say. Peter

Oh, I forgot, if members want to place personal attacks against CTW, Clean to Green, California port officials, or politicians, feel free. I would love to have one of those folks enter here and hold a conversation. I would love nothing better than to exchange a phone number with one of those idiots. I guess they are all too busy reading a new book by Elmer Fudd "How to completely obliterate an OO" for both personal gain, total control of an industry and great profits." That one will never be on my best sellers list.

Hey Pete, sorry every one needs to read some of this garbage. I am sure if you ask the local drivers, one who have been out here for a while , and know how to work the ports and make money at it will tell you about me and what I have done for the port drivers. No one really cares about the garbage that come from other drivers who don't know what they are doing. Any way, how are the drivers who arent' t getting the TWIC badges handling all this port security stuff ? will they still be able to pull containers with the carriers in GA and other areas. I am guessing that they will have to pay some dray fee , no doubt. What are their plans ? this area may have to do the same thing. It is my understanding that up to 50% of the drivers in this area will not qualify.

I am new to this hole port trucker thing , so I have been reading what everyone has been saying. both guys are right and yet the guy from the other site is not telling the truth. I went to a couple of the meetings back in the spring and that guy Paul was asked to speak in the meeting on several occasions, and didn't say anything that wasn't the truth. he also had some good points as to what had been done with previous gropus that he talked about, and now these guys are making the same mistakes. that is why the attendance is getting lower and lower. I too talk with people who go to the meetings. not once did that guy say anything was being done wrong , just that more people needed to join before being taken seriously .there are alot of drivers that think the time and money is being wasted and no results are being seen. Don't lecture me, just what the general opinion is. The leaders of that group has some good ideas, but aren't taking into consideration, what the other drivers think. again, this is just an observation, and i am sure the guys in the Va group will probably talk about me too. but, the Pete guy said every one can express their opinion. either way , I hope these guys can get things straight and find some way every one can work with each other

Nothing is set in stone, but many have given both time, money , and an extreme amount of effort to set up the skeleton as to how it shall function, make up the total contract, and would certainly allow for changes , that would benefit its members. I have no idea as to what direction that OOC group is taking. I had understood they believed it was going to be a different trucking company and that drivers move to that firm only. That being said, they are completely different than our interpretation. I welcome all the trucking firm, all being partners in this event.
I can explain it in this manner. Most truckers (owner operators), like working for their company and when they do not , they move rather quickly to another. So given that as fact, why should someone disrupt that relationship. Some have worked for a guy or gal for years, through the bad and the good. Their is a great deal of respect and loyalty formed. Some are on the fence, they work for them, but actually are always looking for something better. This set up would service both sides and best of all , it should make that sneaky , sort of cheap firm better. The whole playing field is now equal, and the differences are the manner in which they treat their drivers and customers. It will allow for the bad companies to be weeded out and the good firms to get even better. When we mentioned our intentions many times in the past, little response was given. When Paul got into this site, he sort of indicated he was against starting another trucking company. That was never, and will never be our intentions here. I owed a company. I was a great employer. Why should they suffer as a result of unionization? They should not and will not under this plan. They will be closer than ever. A united front, to combat the Steamship Lines as one voice, one direction. So basically somebody got the complete wrong idea when they stated that point. We are pro company , pro union, pro profits, pro delivery chain, pro stability, pro pollution control, with professional drivers and professional trucking companies. We are also pro- on what is expected of us, is paid to us, anti- on free rides by the Steamship Companies. By reading the above post should give you a good indication as to how it should work.

Shortcut, My personal view is this. If a driver does not meet the qualifications as outlined in TWIC, that would/could dramatically reduce the number of drivers available to pull containers. But lets use a little common sense here. Who will prevent a driver that is TWIC approved to pull containers for other drivers sitting outside the terminal? Are the Feds going to put investigators in your bunks watching what you do? Of course not. So where there is a will, their is a way. I believe Owner Operators, are just a hair under a farmer , when it comes to patching things up and figuring out a means to accomplish a positive result to a major problem. If farmers and owner operators ran the United States, it would be such a lovely place to live. Of course we would still need drug testing. LOL. Yeah, I know some drivers are idiots, but in reality, not a whole bunch, just a few. Put a dollar in front of even the idiots and they become Einsteins.

what do you mean by common sense ? I am confused. as far as the drivers not having twic badges , will they try to stop the drivers with out the crudential from pulling cans down the road?

Amazing! Virginia has come alive. Sounds like we are still doing things we tried twenty years ago though. Oh well, I guess it'll all work out in the end. For those who remember starting back in the mid eighties we had the Southeastern Drivers association in Norfolk/Charleston -- the UCMA in Sav/Charleston/Norfolk/Baltimore/Jacksonville, & the last one before this new OOC was created, the Tidewater Lease Operators Association. All held talks with every single port authority in power and was promised wonderful things. Do you suppose they still hand out all the nice little cup holders, pens, mouse pads, and everything else to make members feel they have a seat at the table? You know the steamship lines have gotta love this.

Do you suppose they still hand out all the nice little cup holders, pens, mouse pads, and everything else to make members feel they have a seat at the table? You know the steamship lines have gotta love this. There have been multiple attempts here in Hampton Roads to organize drivers. Sadly, many owner operators still have a foul taste in their mouth due to past failed efforts and money they lost investing in those organizations. I have a lot of faith in what is happening now. Sure, every organization has it's growing pains. That is to be expected. Even maybe, a learning curve. the OOC is comprised of all working owner operators. All who volunteer their time and effort. As frustrating as the situation is for owner operators, meaningful change does take some time. Hopefully, by monitoring past mistakes, working hard to make informed decisions, and creating a support network for the organization , we can grow into a self sustainable entity that can help in the long term prosperity of our members. As powerful as the steamship lines, ports, and motor carriers are , we won't be backing down. We do promote communication , but not at the expense of our concerns. We won't be tooled. There is a sincere wish to better all of our livelihoods. So, whichever strategy owner operators use, the most important thing is to be patient for growth and work hard, commit and stay the course. The opposition is counting on any organized efforts to fail. They have seen it in the past. This, we can all learn from. What to do, what not to do. The worst we can do is remain idle.

Hey Paul, Seems this is the hottest board on the site. Sincerely sir, and I speak from being there , done that. Steamship Lines will tell you everything you want to here. They have no intentions of folding up and seeing it your way, the right way. They love to humor, love to connive, love to mis-direct, love to split and divide. You will get nowhere with that group of lier's , cheats and scoundrels. Its not in their blood to help truckers. Its in their blood to suck truckers dry. So take you time and talk, and that is all you shall get , its talk, cheap talk.
They do however respond quite well with force. Head between the vice, turning and twisting until , uncle is stated.
Believe your group is any different than past attempts, then go ahead and set up forums with them, go to their meetings, free coffee and donuts, firm hand shakes, wink in the eye. That being said , they got you right where they want you.
No, when this group here hits them, they will know they been hit, and we will do it legally this time. Think port officials are any better? Remember Paul, those are the guys who sign the contracts with them, those are the guys who run to the papers announcing another huge deal has been made with Maersk to bring 200 more ship callings to where ever. No buddy, its us against them. Nothing else but us against them.
Here we got the oldest of old. People who seen it all and did it all , and lessons taught. We set the new rules, we make the standards, and we make no peace offerings only demands.
Think your group is making headway with them? Have you been invited into the inner workings of the lines? No, you will see what they want you to see, and hear what they want you to hear.
There day is not only coming with the truckers, but with the ports as well. The ports for years have been bending back wards to please these lines. That is the problem. They actually believe they are above all known standards of business. They been catered to all their lives and feel seniority to all who attend. They collectively ruined their business and work hard each and every day to kill the trucking industry. So all I can say is good luck, you will need it. It will never work, you too shall find this out.
They want and need this U.S. market. They love our ports. When the tides do turn, and they shall, we will be in charge of movements once again. Remember they cannot hide from this group , they can move to other ports but we shall follow. There is no rock whereas they can hide under. The really good thing here is none or I should say hardly none are U.S. flag anymore. None of them represent America, in the true sense of being a U.S. Flag carrier. Best of all none get the benefits of being such, under the shipping Act of 1984.
We are organized, well targeted and know our enemy here. You see one part of the forum here, there are many other parts doing many other things. We all shall meet in the middle one day. The day of reckoning for the Steamship Lines.

We are organized, well targeted and know our enemy here. You see one part of the forum here, there are many other parts doing many other things. We all shall meet in the middle one day. The day of reckoning for the Steamship Lines. Pete, I can't argue with the lip service treatment the Steam Ship lines like to dish out. I never really suspect that any Owner Operator Organization will be invited to their "inner Circle". We represent an organized work force and that scares them. Personally, it's not hard to spot when someone is trying to tool you. I feel that if you know that going in, you might come out o.k. In the talks that i have participated in , I have firmly stated, we will listen and provide feedback, voice our concerns , and hope we can work together on some issues to be ultimately productive. However, we WILL pursue means necessary to achieve our goals. As an organization , there are quite a few things we are working on legally. This, regardless of what promises are made, will not stop. On another level, when there is an established body that has the power to induce change , penalty, etc, etc, the Port or Shiplines will eventually have to consider that body when making decisions. Because, they will know if they make a bad choice there could be consequence. I don't mean to oversimplify the issue, nor sound naive. But progress can be made through achievements happening on multiple levels. On "ground level" we hope to address some of the "area specific" issues that present themselves to owner operators. Even small improvements in port operations, motor carrier responsibility , and driver awareness coupled together can constitute something worthwhile. As an organization, we are working on "all aspects" of our local port community. Things like getting the port to widen the approach lanes in one of the transfer zones because the jersey walls were placed to close and trucks were getting stuck and chassis interlocked eith the truck next door. They had a "engineer" design this traffic pattern. They never had test runs to see how traffic would flow. Do to work with the operations dept. at that particular terminal , lanes were widened, the traffic flows a bit better , and a potential dangerous area was fixed. Yes, this should not have to be our responsibility but in reality if we want improvement , we have to make it so. Now , of course this isn't life changing but it still provided a benefit to the drivers. especially to the one driver who "could" have had his truck damaged via an accident and put out of work. It was one small thing that maybe made work a little easier for our area owner operators. My point in all this being , yes there needs to be SERIOUS and immediate change regards to rates and business practices of the port and steamship lines, but there is value in trying to address other concerns that make life a little easier. I don't suggest losing focus of the big goals to work on the small but there are a lot of things that can come together to better the overall job of being a intermodal based owner operator. We are working with local vendors to create incentive programs etc. There really is much to be done. Just a thought, we both agree on the importance of "free market". But, a little regulation is surely needed to impose some kind of ethical practice by the powers that be. Though we are currently "deregulated" we don't really have a free market. There have been some serious talks by our new coming administration about there being some serious government intervention in regards to large business. If done right, that could certainly be something to get the ball rolling. If done right. Though the trucking industry hasn't been named (to my knowledge) it could be a matter of time. Could be good.........

Hey OOC or Paul, You've said my deletion was a mistake. I tried to sign back on your sight and it says my account hasn't been approved yet. Then you told me to send you an email if it wasn't fixed, I did. Still nothing! If you don't want to make the connections with other ports, then you are doomed to fail in your endeavors. We all have to have some unity on the east coast or the Teamsters and the Environmental groups are going to come in and crucify the O/O's as in LA. All I want is to open the communication between the O/O's in every port and let all the ideas circulate. If your afraid of that then your no better than the organizations you say your fighting against.

I am stating my opinion honestly here, not meaning to offend. Paul, you have not a snowballs chance in hell , if you have any contact with the Steamship Lines in any decision making policy with your organization. I don't know how much clearer I could of painted that picture in my above posting. They will wine, dine, and puke all over your shirt. Remember you are dealing with the devil that started the whole mess. Yes, devil, not even as harsh as I wanted to be there. We are doing things behind the scene here. We are guided by one known fact. Never, never talk to the Steamship Lines. They quite honestly have nothing to add to our group. They will however be quite involved in changing their tactics as a result of our organization. That is how you deal with them, strong armed, hammer in hand, and beating them over the head. Yes, they can read somethings we do but never the real good stuff here. We sort of let them read what we want them to read. How can you even suggest , their participation will add one thing, knowing they were behind this whole mess? How??? How can you members have even a shade of hope it will work out? Let me ask you this very important question. Who do you think is also behind the California Green thing. Is it just the Teamsters that are trying to guide the labor issue? Who might benefit the most from controlled labor? Answer: Yes , the Teamsters and mostly the Steamship Lines. Do you believe the Teamsters are footing the whole bill there? Brother, you better put on your thinking cap. Why have they (i.e.) the Steamship Lines, not made even one public comment, when whatever happens in LA/LB has a very drastic effect on them? Why? Because they already are there, they already are helping, but all behind the scenes, like the little worms they are, always were, and always will be.
So basically, by including them into your group, you lie with the devil themselves. Your followers will go in the direction they promote. They give very little and take much. Right now, and as we speak, all of your members, including ours are servicing the Steamship Lines for free. Right now and as we speak, we are doing untold amounts of free container moves to both secure wheels and get equipment serviced. I can say this and without any doubt, this will all come to an end, and we will be getting our money back from them. I know this will happen , with the efforts of this organization. We will get them out of domestic transportation business, knowing they had no business being there int he first place. We will force them to service us well at the terminals, and nothing for free anymore. After all their very jobs were to make equipment available on both a safe and timely manner. Never , ever have they done that. Here is a typical conversation between one of our union trucking companies and the Steamship Lines. Good morning Mr. Steamship, I was calling to verify that these ten containers were steamship cleared, custom cleared, mounted and ready to be pulled? No, you say, you are a grounded line and my driver needs to get a set of wheels, at your chassis depot and go and have it mounted themselves. Well do me a favor and call me when they are mounted. I will confirm all you stated on an email and send a copy to my importer and their CHB. Good morning, Mr. Trucker here. Oh, how are you doing Mr. Steamship Company. Oh, the containers are mounted and ready to go. Gee, thanks so much , we will make all the moves today. Have a great day sir. Paul, that is what will happen with us. I have no idea how your drivers will be handled. Remember Paul, they don't own that freight, my importer does. They are contracted to move it via ocean transport and make it available to be picked up. That is all they will do in future. Best of all, when delays happen, the fingers now get pointed in the direction of the delayer and not the trucker, as it should of been all along. Not enough labor at the terminals, not enough wheels, wheels that are in bad order, too much congestion, not the truckers problem, its the line problem. Importer/Exporter paying truckers for delays caused by the line, they move their business, to another line that services their needs in a cost effective and reasonable manner. That simple. They cannot run and hide anymore, and certainly cannot blame others for their own deficiencies. The cat is out of the bag.

Pkd5757, who really cares if you can or cannot sign in. You know the truth there. Just leave it alone, that group has nothing to offer us. If they are restricting participation or not, who cares? Its beating a dead horse. Let it go.

One fairly important question. If a ILA member , on his toploader, happens to drop a container, onto the cab of my driver, killing the driver, who is responsible? Who covers his workmans comp if he is disabled? Gee , wait until the lawyers get a hold of this one. If I were a steamship lines, I certainly would not want that liability facing me.

Do you battle the Steamship lines to get the service policy changed? Again, beating a dead horse there. OR do you contact their insurance firm, making them aware of this huge liability? Now there is a good idea!!!!!!!!!

I can see it now. I had a driver named Froggy. I will wake up one morning and look out to see and witness the vessel steaming up the channel with the name Froggy's Hope on its bow. Yeap, Froggy will now own that ship.
